Konya is built for walking and cheap public transport — once you understand how it works. The city center is compact, the tram runs straight through the tourist spine, and taxis are plentiful and honest. Getting around Konya is genuinely easy, but there are a few things to know before you start clicking "hail a cab" on your phone.

The City Layout at a Glance

Konya's sightseeing is clustered around two zones:

  1. Alaeddin Hill (Alaeddin Tepesi) — the elevated central core with the Alaeddin Mosque and old city walls
  2. Mevlâna Museum area — about 800m east of Alaeddin, along the main boulevard (Atatürk Cad / Mevlâna Cad)

The two main attractions are a 10-minute walk apart. Most visitors can cover the city center entirely on foot, using transport only for the bus station, airport, or day trips out to Çatalhöyük.

Getting to Konya

Route Option Duration Cost
Istanbul → Konya High-speed train (YHT) 4.5 hrs ₺250–400
Ankara → Konya High-speed train (YHT) 1.5 hrs ₺100–200
Cappadocia → Konya Bus (Göreme/Nevşehir) 3.5 hrs ₺200–350
Istanbul → Konya Bus (overnight) 10–11 hrs ₺300–450
Konya Airport (KYA) Domestic flights Varies ₺400–900

Train: The high-speed rail connection from Ankara is outstanding value — one of the best train rides in Turkey. Book via TCDD e-Bilet at least a few days ahead, especially on weekends.

Bus: Konya's main bus terminal (otogar) sits 7km north of center. Major carriers — Kamil Koç, Metro Turizm, Süha Turizm — connect Konya to practically every city in Turkey. From the otogar, take the tram or a taxi to the center.

Getting Around the City Center

🚶 Walking

For the core tourist zone, walking is the fastest and most pleasant option. The route from Alaeddin Hill to the Mevlâna Museum is flat and well-signposted. Allow 10 minutes. Most hotels in the center are within 1km of both major sights.

🚃 Tram (Tramvay)

Konya has two tram lines that are worth knowing:

  • T1 (blue line): Runs through the main city center, connecting the otogar area, Alaeddin Tepesi, and Mevlâna Museum district. This is the line tourists use most.
  • T2 (red/extended line): Stretches further into residential districts; less useful for visitors.
Tram Details Info
Fare ₺7–10 per journey
Payment KonyaKart (reloadable contactless card) or single-ride token
Hours ~06:30–23:30
Frequency Every 5–15 minutes

Tip: Buy a KonyaKart at any major tram stop kiosk — the tap-on fare is 20–30% cheaper than single tokens. The card costs ₺15 and can be reloaded at machines or booths.

🚕 Taxis

Taxis in Konya are metered and generally reliable. Drivers are less aggressive than in Istanbul.

Route Approximate Fare
City center to Otogar (7km) ₺70–100
Alaeddin Mosque to Mevlâna ₺20–30 (not worth it; just walk)
Center to Airport (KYA, ~13km) ₺120–180
Center to Çatalhöyük (~60km) ₺400–550 round trip

Flag rate: ₺20–25 opening charge, then ~₺15/km. Nighttime rates (midnight–06:00) run ~20% higher.

App-based options: BiTaksi and Uber both operate in Konya. BiTaksi tends to have better availability; prices are similar to metered cabs.

🚌 Dolmuş (Shared Minibus)

Dolmuşes are shared minibuses that run fixed routes at flat fares (~₺10–15). They're excellent for getting to neighborhoods not served by the tram, but routes aren't well-mapped in English. For day-to-day city travel, the tram is simpler.

Getting to the Otogar (Bus Terminal)

The otogar is 7km north of center — too far to walk. Your options:

  1. Tram T1 — Ride to the "Tren Garı" or northern terminus, then take a connecting shuttle or taxi (~₺25). Some long-distance bus companies also run servis (free shuttle buses) from central stops to their bus terminal gates.
  2. Taxi — ₺70–100, about 15 minutes.
  3. Free shuttle (servis) — Major carriers (Kamil Koç, Metro) operate free city shuttles from their ticket offices near the center. Ask at purchase.

Getting to Konya Airport (KYA)

Konya Çokyaşar Airport handles domestic flights to Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir (mostly Turkish Airlines and Pegasus).

Option Cost Duration
Taxi ₺120–180 20–25 min
Havaş airport bus ₺40–60 35–40 min
BiTaksi/Uber ₺110–160 20–25 min

The Havaş shuttle departs from central Konya (near the main post office on Atatürk Cad) timed to flight schedules. Confirm timing via havas.net or ask your hotel.

Day Trips from Konya

Çatalhöyük (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

One of the world's oldest human settlements (~9,500 years old), Çatalhöyük is 60km southeast. It's a must-see but awkward to reach without a car.

Option Cost Notes
Guided tour ₺800–1,200/person Usually includes transport and guide
Taxi (round trip) ₺450–550 Driver waits 2–3hrs while you visit
Rent a car ₺400–600/day Most flexibility; Konya center has Hertz, Sixt, and local agencies
Dolmuş to Çumra then taxi ₺80–120 total Budget option; requires transfers

Most budget travelers book a shared guided tour from their hotel or the tourism office near Mevlâna Museum.

Sultandağı Hot Springs / Beyşehir Lake

Both are 90–120km from Konya and reachable by bus from the otogar. Buses to Beyşehir run regularly (₺80–120, ~2 hours) and the lake is spectacular for a half-day escape.

Cappadocia Connection

If you're continuing to Cappadocia, direct buses from Konya's otogar to Göreme/Nevşehir run 4–5 times daily (~₺250–350, 3.5 hours). No flight needed.

Car Rental in Konya

Renting a car opens up Çatalhöyük, the salt lake (Tuz Gölü), and the surrounding Anatolian steppe without relying on tours.

  • Main agencies: Hertz, Sixt, and local companies near Alaeddin Hill
  • Average cost: ₺400–700/day for a compact
  • Petrol: ~₺45–52/liter (2026 rates)
  • Driving style: Turkish highway driving is assertive but manageable; Konya's city streets can be chaotic around the bazaar

International Driving Permit recommended but not strictly required for EU/US licenses for short rentals.

Transport Tips for Konya

1. Get a KonyaKart immediately. It's cheaper for trams and works across city buses too.

2. The walk between the two main sights is short and pleasant. Don't waste money on taxis for a 10-minute stroll.

3. Friday is the busiest day. Traffic and foot traffic spike for Friday prayers; budget extra time near midday.

4. Taxis from the airport to center have fixed unofficial rates. Ask your driver to confirm the price before starting, or use BiTaksi.

5. Confirm otogar shuttle times for your bus company. Not all servis buses stop at the same central point.
