Valparaíso's food scene is the logical extension of its character: unpredictable, authentic, and layered. Street-level holes-in-the-wall compete with cerro-top restaurants offering some of the best Pacific views in South America. Chorrillana
The city's cult dish. A pile of French fries topped with caramelized onions, sautéed beef strips, and fried or scrambled eggs. It's designed to be shared — a single chorrillana for two is the standard order. Locals debate which bar makes the definitive version; the argument has been going on since at least the 1970s. Machas a la Parmesana

Caldillo de Congrio

Empanadas de Mariscos

El Plan (Port District)
The flat lower city is where Valparaíso eats like a working port town should: fast, generous, and cheap.
Mercado Puerto — The city's covered market is the best place for a cheap almuerzo (set lunch). Head upstairs to the mezzanine level where a dozen picadas (simple lunch counters) compete for your attention. A three-course set lunch with soup, main, and drink runs 4,000–6,000 CLP. Seafood Markets
Valparaíso's best raw seafood experience isn't in a restaurant — it's at Caleta El Membrillo and Caleta Portales, the city's active fishing wharves.
Caleta El Membrillo is about 2km east of the main port. Arrive early (7–9am) when fishing boats return and the auction tables are active. Local vendors grill fish on the spot; a plate of reineta (Pacific pomfret) grilled over coals with bread and pebre (Chilean salsa) costs about 3,500–5,000 CLP.
Caleta Portales is slightly further (5km from El Plan) and less touristy. The fish market here has indoor stalls selling whole fish, live shellfish, and prepared ceviche by the cup. A sea lion colony hangs around the docks — a free spectacle.
